eng Action research in initial English language teacher education Action research has become a firmly established practice in teacher education for its potential to enhance professional development of both pre-service and in-service teachers. Based on the review of more than 40 studies, the presentation offers an overview of purposes (topics, procedures, methodologies, participants, length, links to other components of study programmes, etc.) of implementing action research in initial teacher education with a special focus on English language teacher education. With reference to the review of research, the authors present the outcomes of a case study of the action research implementation in the initial English language teacher education study programme at the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic. In this programme, action research methodology is used as a pedagogical strategy to enhance student teacher learning. It is embedded in the clinical experience of trainee teachers of English, and, consequently, student teacher action research serves as a means of bridging the theory-practice divide. The case study design is used here as an evaluation method to understand this complex intervention. The outcomes of the study suggest that the action research pedagogical strategy is placed, integrated and timed appropriately in the study programme with respect to the student teachers´ readiness (knowledge base and experience). Generally, the intervention enhances their professional learning, however, it does not concern all its areas. This finding represents a challenge to be faced by teacher educators in terms of their research and practices. action research; initial teacher education; English
