eng The interplay between the orbital, periodic and prosodic patterns in the generic structure of hard news This paper addresses the issue of the generic structure of hard news. Typically, the hard news structure is referred to as the inverted pyramid (Bell 1991; Bhatia 1993) or the orbital generic structure (White 1998, 2000). Generally, the orbital pattern is based on the unequal relation between particles (e.g. Martin 1992). Applied to the structure of hard news, the orbital relation obtains between the nucleus (headlines, lead) and satellites, i.e. functionally determined elements in the body of the text (White 1998, 2000). The orbital structure is said to facilitate the communicative aim of hard news, i.e. objective and impersonal reporting. Alternative approaches to the generic structure are presented e.g. in White (2003) and Nádraská (2016). The present paper aims to show that apart from the orbital pattern, the hard news generic structure is also realized by the periodic and prosodic patterns (Martin 1992). Functionally identical satellites may appear cyclically and form strings consisting of two and more elements and thus display the wave-like periodic pattern (e.g. Martin 1992). Moreover, hard news satellites which are built upon direct and non-direct forms of presentation tend to follow the gradually amplifying prosodic pattern (e.g. Martin 1992) in that forms of reported language are often sequenced in such a way that they display step-by-step intensification of the reported speaker’s perspective. In cases where the prosodic amplification operates across the satellite boundary in satellite strings, the functionality of hard news must be seen as resting on the interplay between the orbital, periodic and prosodic patterns. generic structre; hard news; orbital, periodic and prosodic patterns; perspective and subjectivity; forms of presentation
