eng Hesitation in Learner’s Dialogues: Distribution of Individual Means The structure of spontaneous spoken discourse is significantly influenced by the principles of on-line production, which means that participants are concurrently required to keep talking, to plan ahead and to consider what has been already said. Such a situation is reflected in certain degree of dysfluency which has an impact on specific features of grammar of speech. The paper presents one part of a bigger research project with the overall aim to analyze selected grammatical and discourse features of students’ spoken performances at the beginning of their university studies. The corpus comprises 150,000 words and includes both monologues and dialogues. This study is focused on the distribution of various means that students use when they hesitate what to say next. The categorization of individual hesitators is based on findings by Biber et al. (1999), who analysed native speakers’ (NS) speech. The figures of the analysis reveal that Czech learners of English apply rather different strategies and do not use those more or less formulaic structures observable in NS conversation. It may be concluded that the distribution of individual hesitators is influenced by the level of their communicative competence in English as a foreign language. Thus the findings should be used to modify syllabi of individual courses of TEFL programme with the goal to improve students’ second language acquisition processes during their university studies. spoken language; discourse markers; learner language; English language acquisition; corpus linguistics
