eng Means of Backchannelling in L2 Spoken Discourse This paper presents one part of a bigger project called “Aspects of English Language Acquisition of Czech Students on the Onset of Teacher Education”, aimed at the process of acquiring communicative competence in speaking English as a foreign language by Czech university learners. Within the aims of the project, the corpus of Czech university students spoken English has been built and currently has been analysed from various points of view. For a couple of decades spoken discourse has been in focus of the research which indicates that the structures used in speech are significantly different from those used in writing. Thus the goals of the analysis in the project head towards to (a) identify differences between spoken and written discourse; (b) reveal the differences between L1 and L2 speakers. In this paper, the attention is primarily paid to the ways of expressing attention during the dialogues. Since backchannels are one of the natural segments of authentic native conversations, the research has been motivated by the question if the students are able to acquire this means of communication even though they are primarily instructed on the basis of the written language. The conclusions of this study may further lead to modifications of teaching methods in language courses. interview; spoken language; backchannelling; English acquisition; learner corpus
