eng Learners' spoken English: Expressions of hesitation in students' dialogues Grammar of spoken language has been in focus of linguistic research for a couple of decades and some authors even argue that writing and speech are two different systems (Carter and McCarthy 1995:147). Unplanned and spontaneous speech is fundamentally affected by the fact that speakers produce the language on the spot, which results in the use of specific sentence structures and means of discourse management (Biber et al. 1999). This paper presents the analysis of learner corpus, focused on selected structures typical of dialogue, namely the distribution of various hesitators: repeats (i.e. exact repetition of one or more words) and filled pauses (i.e. non-word filler: special vowel sound filling silence) and the effect on the flow of natural conversation. The analysed corpus comprises recordings of more than fifty dialogues of first year university students, future English language teachers with quite high communicative competence of English. The categorization of repeats is based on corpus findings by Biber et al., where the discourse was produced by native speakers. This research has been motivated by the question if non-native speakers are also able to acquire such structures, even though English language learners are quite frequently instructed on the basis of written discourse (McCarthy and Carter 2001:73). The conclusions of this study may lead to modifications of teaching methods in language courses with the aim to help students facilitate English language acquisition (Granger et al. 2002). spoken language; discourse management; hesitators; repetition; learner corpus
