eng Contested Language: Nuwe Afrikaanse Beweging in a New South Africa After the demise of apartheid in South Africa, Afrikaners were deprived of dominance and, as a result, their mother tongue ? Afrikaans - , one of the cornerstones of their identity, started to lose its former exclusive status. This provoked a new wave of nationalism among Afrikaners that has absorbed even formerly moderate spokespersons of this volk. The aim of the text is to describe and analyze manifold trajectories of the struggle waged by Afrikaners for their cultural autonomy and language in postapartheid South Africa. The recent intense public debate that has been called by some Nuwe Afrikaanse Beweging (The New Afrikaans Movement) has indicated diverse approaches of both language activists and language advocates on the issue of language, identity and diversity, namely the concept of ?alternative Afrikaans?, ?affirmative diversity?, or ?difference diversity?. Since the language debate can be seen as part of the renegotiation of identity in South Africa after 1994, the paper will attempt to outline the position of Afrikaans-speakers within the nation-building process of a New South Africa.
