Naprostá většina dosud používaných definic je přitom evidentě založena na zdánlivě samozřejmém předpokladu: náboženství je univerzální fenomén celého lidstva. Tento předpoklad zpochybnilo několik badatelů (od W.C. Smitha po Bálagangádharu Ráa), jelikož se ukazuje, že veškerá charakteristika zdánlivě univerzálního konceptu náboženství má zřetelně teologický (křesťanský) původ. Následuje návrh dalšího směřování výzkumu indických fenoménů.
eng	If Not Hinduism, Than What? Postcolonial Perspectives on the Question of Religion in India	There is on-going discussion about the definitions of "Hinduism" among scholars both in the West and in India. After discussing different opinions on this issue, author describes important turning point in the discussion: all definitions are based on the assumption, that religion is universal to human kind, and so Hinduism is one form ot it. But as several scholars argue, it is not necessary the case (from W.C. Smith to Balagangadhara Rao). If we consider the essential points that should make the definition, we can prove their theological, hence non-scientific origin. Several other possible directions - fields of interest - in the study of Indian traditions are suggested.
