Poměrně optimisticky se začala etablovat ve 20. letech 20. století a nejvýznamnější její osobností se stal Otakar Pertold. V době komunistického režimu však byla zakazána, případně pěstována jako vědecký ateizmus či v součást teologie. Až po roce 1989 nastává příznívá atmosféra pro její opětovné začlenění do VŠ studia.
eng	Outline of the History of the Study of Religions in the Czech Republic	The advancement of religious studies in the Czech Republic was historically very complicated. The successful beginnings of the discipline during the 1920s could not continue due to the political circumstances of the Second World War. After WW II the study of religion was forbidden under the Communist regime because of ideological reasons. Therefore any study of religion became generally restricted to theological faculties. Only in this marginalized way the discipline survived. The basic task of the scholars interested in the study of religions during the re-establishment of democracy in the 1990s consisted in the separation of religious studies from theology, in the defining of its specific field for research and especially in the institutionalization of the discipline.	x
