The book, with the poetic title White Eagle, Black Eagle and the subtitle Ethnic Relations in the German-Polish Borderlands, is devoted to the analysis of the political-economic relations of the inhabitants on both sides of the border from the perspective of history and sociocultural anthropology. An important leitmotif is ethnic or national identity, which the author deals with mainly as a regional and local identity, as well as the confrontation of the approach of official authorities and ‘ordinary’ people to cross-border relations and the impact on their lives. The author, Robert Parkin, is an Emeritus Fellow of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Oxford and has worked in many European universities and research institutions. His research has focused on kinship, South Asian anthropology, French anthropology and, in the last two decades, European anthropology.	review; borders; ethnicity; nation; Poland; Germany
