eng Anti-Jewish Violence in Galicia after the Collapse of Austria-Hungary, 1918-1919 After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, Galicia, located within the Cisleithanian region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, faced severe challenges. The collapse of the empire and the Polish-Ukrainian conflict led to distressing events for the Jewish community. The power vacuum created an environment ripe for violence. This paper focuses on both military and civilian violence that occurred after Poland declared independence, with a specific emphasis on the brutal events of 1918 and 1919 in cities such as Lviv, Przemysl, Kraków, and Rzesów but also smaller towns. The examination delves into violence carried out by Polish recruits and civilians against Jews. The paper also explores Jewish self-defense efforts in various locations and their results. Jews are thus perceived as active actors and not only as targets of violence. It sheds light on the Blue Army led by General Józef Haller, who arrived in Poland in April 1919 and played a crucial role in defeating the West Ukrainian People's Republic. However, Haller's army was known for its anti-Semitic tendencies and attacks against Jews. The primary goal of this paper is to analyze critical factors influencing the dynamics of violence, particularly focusing on the triggers and progression of these events. The paper also considers the practices of violence. An emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of rumours on violence. The paper draws upon archival sources from Polish, Ukrainian, and US archives. Austria-Hungary; Jewish self-defense; Haller's army, anti-Jewish violence
