eng Hysteria, Hypochondria, and Gender in Domestic Medical Manuals of the Second Half of the 19th Century "Home doctor's manuals became a phenomenon in the Czech lands, especially in the second half of the 19th century. They were supposed to be a helper and advisor in every household, to advise what to do in the moment of an accident or illness, as well as to encourage a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases using preventive measures. The authors were doctors, alternative healers or lay people. Hysteria as a typically female disease and hypochondria as a male equivalent appeared as a type of individual disease in all types of domestic physicians. Just as there were different authors of domestic doctors, these diseases are also described in various ways. In the conference paper, I would like to present hysteria and hypochondria and their changing discourse during the second half of the 19th century. Not only the causes and symptoms of the disease will be described, but also specific advice on how to treat them using home remedies. I will also focus on the gender specifics of these diseases, which reflect the position of individual sexes in society at the time and ideas about their features and roles. Let's imagine a hysterical woman who sits for coffee with her female friends and the effective treatment for her illness is physical, strenuous work, and a hypochondriac, an overworked man who needs rest, alcohol, and gambling.
