eng Instructions of French diplomats at the Imperial Court and Imperial Diplomats at the Court of the Sun King in the Second Half of the 17th Century: Content Analysis and Comparison of Narrative Options. The paper deals with the instructions of French diplomats at the imperial court in Vienna and imperial diplomats at the court of Louis XIV in the second half of the 17th century. By centre-stage, corresponding with my research, there are the instruction of the extraordinary envoy of the French king Bernardin Cadot, Marquis de Sébeville, for his mission in Vienna in 1681–1684 and the instruction of Heinrich Franz von Mansfeld, the envoy of Emperor Leopold I to the court of the Sun King between 1680–1683. The instruction was a key document from the sending monarch for an early modern diplomatic mission, and therefore knowledge of it is essential for understanding of a diplomat’s behaviour and actions. The range of instructions is very diverse, some of them are short, which was common especially in the early modern period, others contain many flowery words; the great extensiveness of the instructions is typical especially for the 18th century. It is possible to read from the instructions what the main tasks of the diplomats were, it is also possible to observe whether the tasks of a political nature were more captured in the instructions, or whether they were mainly devoted to ceremonial matters. In the paper I will analyse the content of several instructions and compare French and imperial instructions in the second half of the 17th century. France; diplomacy; instructions; 17th century
