eng Examples of iconographic sources in Czech cookbooks from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries (1890-1914) Pictures and photographs are an integral part of every cookbook. They document the cooking process or show what the final dish looks like. They are often the strongest motivation for the decision to try a dish. Summing up all the differences in appearance and content, today's readers would probably find cookbooks published around 1900 quite surprising at first glance. Most cookbooks were not illustrated and did not contain many pictures or photographs. It was only very slowly that these became a part of this genre. At first they were purely decorative, but later various functional drawings began to appear. Graphically designed and illustrated cookbooks comparable to those of today did not appear until after the Second World War. Based on carefully selected images, drawings and illustrations from cookbooks published at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this research will attempt to answer several basic questions. What was the meaning of the various pictorial materials in cookbooks and how did they change over time. And what does this specific iconographic source tell us today about food preparation between 1890 and 1914? Cookbooks,1890-1914, pictures, gastronomy
