eng Critical issues in teaching English as a foreign language revisited This paper presents a study that builds on an earlier study on critical issues of the curricula in the basic subjects of lower secondary education, which was carried out several years ago by a team of teacher trainers at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. The results of the sub-study on critical topics in the curricula of teaching English as a foreign language identified speaking and grammar as critical; moreover, the present perfect tense seems to be the critical topic of the ELT curriculum at lower secondary level. The present study replicates the above-mentioned study on the critical issues in the English language curriculum. The study shares both the understanding of the concept of critical topics and the research design with the earlier study. In the replication study, a modified version of the survey was used, and a larger number of primary and lower secondary teachers were questioned compared to the original study. The research instrument was distributed online; 67 respondents took part in the survey and identified 180 critical issues. The paper presents the results of a detailed analysis of these critical issues using the concept of language skills and language elements as a framework for analysis. critical issues; curriculum; English as a foreign language
