eng The Role of the Polish Vasas in the Dynastic System of the Habsburgs (1589–1648) This paper sets out to provide an overview of the alliance which existed between the House of Habsburg and the Polish branch of the Vasa dynasty in 1589–1648. The role of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the foreign policies of the Emperors and the Spanish kings is generally not discussed in the histories of either one of the Habsburg monarchies. This lack of interest is completely unjustified, however, as good relations with the Polish kings were the basis of Habsburg Eastern policy throughout the aforementioned period. This dynastic kinship was expressed by military cooperation (e.g. in the 1620 Battle of White Mountain) as well as by three marriages between the Polish Vasa kings and the archduchesses of the Styrian line of the Habsburg family. Importantly, the decades-long Habsburg-Vasa political interaction provides valuable insight into the ever-changing state of relations within the House of Habsburg itself. Although the Emperors and the Spanish kings cooperated in their policy towards Poland, they sometimes clashed over their divergent interests. The peculiarities of the relations between all of these monarchs will be shown on the example of the 1645 diplomatic mission of Prince Maximillian II of Dietrichstein to Warsaw, who served as an extraordinary ambassador of both King Philip IV of Spain and Emperor Ferdinand III.
