eng	Punishments in education from the perspective of future teachers at the beginning of their teacher training	This contribution introduces the issue of punishments in education and upbringing through the eyes of future English teachers. Firstly, the issue of using punishments is placed in a context of Czech legislation, then punishments and their role in educatioan and upbringing are defined and finally a selected approach towards building on the professional identity of students is described. Subsequently, a research survey, the participants of which were first-year students of English in Education at the University of Pardubice, is presented. As a part of building their professional identity, students were asked (in the evocation phase of the E-U-R model) to write their current opinions and views on the topic of punishments in education and upbringing. The analysis of the data from their papers revealed that at the beginning of their teacher training, most of the students consider punishments, both corporal and non-corporal, an important part in upbringing a child. Furthermore, warnings of undesirable behavior, ensuring a change in behavior and ensuring obedience are considered to be the primary roles of punishments.	punishments in education; teacher training; E-U-R model of learning
