eng Early Burial Controversy and the Demarcation of Jewish Orthodoxy Since 16th century Hevra Kadisha held in Aschkenaz area a monopoly on performance of funeral. Besides taking care of the dying and ritual preparation of the death body for funeral, this included also practice of early burial, ie. burial the day or day after decease. At the turn of 18th century, with the development of medicine, was this practice in Holy Roman Empire, however, limited by series of restriction by the non-jewish authorities for danger of burying of people in coma who are seemingly death. These restrictions provoked debate about necessity of early burial by Jewish law and demand for changes in funeral practice by reform Jews.
