eng	The North and South Generational Divide: On Political and Moral Aspects of the Interwar Travelling	For interwar British writers, travelling abroad, “away from it all,” became one of the most common forms of response to the disquieting situation spiralling towards the war. The French Riviera, Italy and Greece and other destinations in the warm and sunny Mediterranean dominated their travel itineraries. The presentation will start by outlining this tendency “to escape” to the South. Then it will focus on its reception by a younger interwar generation, especially by the poet W.H. Auden. His pronounced emotional and intellectual responsiveness to particular places, environmental types and their embedment in arts allowed him to reflect upon the “chase for the South”. I will show that the needle of his emotional compass was attracted by the North and that this predilection had also a political and moral dimension – it was part of his identification with a younger generation of interwar, socially committed writers accusing those heading South of ivory-towerism.	interwar; Britain; travel writing; Auden; escapism; North; South
