eng Past, Present - But What about the Future? The Northern Ireland Conflict in a Novel for Young Adults. The ethnic-nationalistic conflict in Northern Ireland in the second half of the 20th century has received numerous literary presentations. The paper focused on the 2008 novel Bog Child written by Siobhan Dowd. Although the novel was marketed, probably because of its use of a teenage protagonist, as young adult (teenage) book, the analysis attempts to show that the novel is very complex, multi-layered, and addresses many issues fundamental not only to a maturing reader but to an adult one as well and therefore can be seen as the so-called cross-over novel, i.e. a text intended for young readers but appealing to adult ones as well. The analysis of the novel focuses on marginality, ethical and political responsibility, on the representation of historical material, and the use of generic features of the Bildungsroman and historical novel.
