eng A remark on adjectival functions of the English -ing and -ed forms in a learner corpus of Czech students The aim of this presentation is to assess the variety of lexical items in the adjective position of complex noun phrases. The research was based on a small learner corpus which is a transcription of the spoken English language of 110 first-year students in the TEFL programmes of three Czech universities, whose knowledge should correspond to the B2 level of the CEFR. Their command of the English language was not influenced by their university study programme; it only reveals the knowledge and skills they acquired during their pre-university studies. The presentation proceeds from some conclusions drawn previously from the analysis of this corpus where one of the outcomes was an indication of an unsatisfactory level of the students´ vocabulary and their ability to structure well complex noun phrases. Attention is focused mainly on the English -ing and -ed forms, because they frequently occupy the adjective position in noun phrases. Statistic data were gathered manually, checked by the programme WordSmith, version 6, Mike Scott, 2015 (Lexical Analysis Software Ltd.. Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK) and some of the achieved outcomes were compared with the data given in Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (Biber et al, 1999). learner corpus; complex noun phrase; -ing form; -ed form; adjectival function
