eng Repetition as a Means of Pause Filling in Conversation One of the typical features of spoken discourse is a certain degree of dysfluency. Especially in conversation it can reflect the influence of certain determinants as the interactivity and spontaneity, the reliance on context, the need for time of online planning. In the flow of communication it is expressed as hesitations which can have the form of silent or filled pauses. One of the strategies to fill such pauses and to gain time is the use of various kinds of repetition. English language native speakers very often unintentionally and involuntarily repeat smaller pieces of utterance (single-word repeats are the most frequent). The research presented in this talk is aimed at the analysis of the most frequent repeats used by non-native speakers. On the basis of comparison the findings with the figures obtained from the native speakers’ conversation analysis, it attempts at tracing general tendencies in such a communication and also at looking for potential influence of the first language on the use of English as a lingua franca. conversation, dysfluency, forms of hesitation
