eng Response Forms and Hesitators in Students’ Interviews Spoken discourse is characterized by several typical features which differentiate it from written texts, one of them being the use of inserts – non-clausal, usually one-word, units. Structurally inserts are defined as peripheral units unable to make up a syntactic relation with other parts of an utterance; however, they play a very important role in the development of interaction in conversation and in establishing the dynamic ongoing exchange. This presentation deals with the analysis of about forty interviews of students of English at B2 level according to the CEFR, focused on the use of various structures of inserts, their distribution and the effect on the flow of natural conversation. Since the relation of participants in such an interview (teacher – student) is rather asymmetrical, only two types (i.e. response markers and hesitators) are investigated. The findings are compared to the conclusions of the studies of spoken discourse by English native speakers with an attempt at identifying the most salient differences, possibly caused by the first language. spoken language, discourse marker, interjection, hesitator, response form
