eng	The Use of MAY/MIGHT in Contemporary Written English	The paper is concerned with the use and distribution of the modal verb MAY and its morphologically past tense form MIGHT in contemporary written British English. It reports the findings of a small-scale investigation into the readings of MAY/MIGHT, interpreting the data collected from four different registers (ADMIN, ACAD, NAT, NEWS). Firstly, the meanings and uses of MAY/MIGHT presented in the literature are reviewed. Secondly, their epistemic and root senses are discussed in relation to various contextual features which help assign analyzed tokens appropriate readings. Thirdly, the incidence of the modals in the excerpted data is presented and the factors governing their distribution across different registers are discussed. Finally, the modal senses of MAY/MIGHT are integrated into an overall framework of hedging.	modal verbs MAY/MIGHT, interpretations and uses, stylistic and contextual features
