eng	John Byng's Rides round Britain: Landscape and Ideology in 18th Century Travel Journalism	The 18th century popularity of Grand tours, combined with an overall emphasis on precision and practicality, created a suitable milieu for a growing demand in topographical writing and travel journals. Yet, such utilitarian literature was increasingly accompanied by the import of new aesthetics mainly through Italian paintings depicting an idealized, Arcadian landscape. At the same time, travellers? attention was being drawn by local places. The aim of this presentation is to explore how John Byng, in his travel diary from the 1780s, digresses from documentative and factual journalism towards a rereading of the landscape under the influence of Romantic aesthetics.	travel journal;18th century;travelogue;Byng;picturesque;ideology
