eng	But Now We Know: Contrastive Coherence Relations in Popular Science	Based on the observation that certain coherence relations tend to appear within or between certain generic stages, this paper studies the occurrence of contrastive coherence relations (as defined by Rhetorical Structure Theory) in popular scientific reporting articles. The paper aims to describe the contexts in which contrastive relations appear, the type of information they usually link and the generic stages in which they appear. The descriptive part of the paper is followed by explanation, where an attempt is made to account for the presence of contrastive relations in particular contexts with regard to the aim of the genre and its stages. Together with the descriptive part of the paper, the explanation contributes to the characterization of popular scientific reporting as a genre. One of the main observations presented in the paper is that contrastive relations are frequently used to show the difference between the previous state of art in a scientific discipline and the scientific achievement reported. Such contrast is usually drawn within the Significance stage in order to increase the ?wonder? appeal of the article.	coherence; contrast; genre; popular science
