prof. Raimonda Gaity „‚One of those books we cannot do without‘: Reflections on Primo Levi’s If This is a Man“,

Anotace: It is now the 100th anniversary of the birth of Primo Levi, whose If this is a Man enables, more than any other book, to understand the ethical dimensions of the Holocaust and why humanity needs that understanding, if it is to understand itself. Levi shows that camps like Auschwitz were extermination camps in two senses: they were at the centre the Nazi efforts to rid the world of Jews; and they were also places of “social and biological extermination” in which the Nazis perfected “the demolition of a man” before they murdered him. Levi’s book is one of the rare works that can reveal the reality of affliction and evil (as Simone Weil puts it), by enabling us to see evil and affliction in the light of a certain kind of Goodness.
Raimond Gaita (nar. 1946) je australský filosof a spisovatel. V minulosti působil na Australian Catholic University a King’s College London (kde je dodnes Professor Emeritus), v současnosti je Professorial Fellow na University of Melbourne. Z jeho filosofických děl uveďme Good and Evil: an absolute conception nebo A Common Humanity (vydané prestižním nakladatelstvím Routledge), či na pomezí beletrie stojící The Philosopher’s Dog. Jeho memoárová kniha Romulus, my father získala řadu literárních cen a byl podle ní natočen film.
