cze Premarital Sexuality and Its Control by the Catholic Church in Bohemia in the Second Half of the 19th Century Based on research regarding marriage protocols and reflections in contemporary Catholic periodicals, this paper will outline the issue of premarital sexuality among Catholic couples in the second half of the 19th century in Bohemia. The objective is to answer the question of what proportion of the engaged couples entered marriage with prior sexual experience and what instruments the Catholic Church used to control premarital sexuality. The question of the premarital sexual experience of the catholic couples was addressed in articles in Catholic periodicals in which clerics reflected on their practical experience. Specific information is provided by the so-called marriage protocols, which were written with the engaged couples before the marriage and included inquiries about their sexual experience. The paper will also present research conducted in the town of Pardubice which provides an interesting insight into an agrarian population undergoing rapid urbanization in the last third of the 19th century and the consequent changes in its sexual behaviour.
