eng National Park as a Crime Scene While the urban milieu is traditionally the most typical setting in crime fiction, American writers have recently situated entire crime fiction series into a variety of national parks both to the enjoyment of their readership and appreciation of critics. Referring to works by Nevada Barr, Dana Stabenow and others, my contribution will look at the ways wilderness appears in the genre. The selected writers present various wilderness locations realistically as environments (rather than simply as crime scenes) while attempting to challenge stereotypical views on those locations by approaching them from a new perspective. Stabenow employs an ethnic investigator, an Aleut, to challenge a tourist view of Alaskan Bush and likewise, Barr subverts common views on American national parks and defamiliarizes the landscape by employing a park ranger, whose first-hand insider’s experience contrasts with the outsiders’ tourist gaze. crime fiction; wilderness; Nevada Barr; Dana Stabenow
