Based on samples of public statements and pronouncements made in then Czechoslovakia and later Czech Republic on the one hand and in mainly the eastern parts of Germany on the other hand, I shall compare similarities and differences in public imaginings of “the West”. Using deictic perspective, I will show the various ways in which the idea of belonging to the West has been utilized in public discourses for various social and political goals by different groups of population in the two countries twenty six years ago and today.
