eng The indeterminacy of voice in hard news quotations The presentation deals with the indeterminacy of voice in hard news quotations. In hard news, quotation is employed to serve many purposes, among others to invoke an external voice in order to dissociate the journalist from the reported form, content and speech act value (e.g. Semino and Short 2004; Waugh 1995). Such use overlaps with the concept of scare quoting, generally defined as inserting words in quotation marks to indicate distance on the part of the speaker due to disagreement or unacceptability of a term in the context used; thus in scare quoting the speaker may express opposition towards their own words or the words attributed to others (e.g. McDonald 2008; Predelli 2003; Thompson 1996; Weizman 1984). The presentation discusses cases in which the origin of the words in quotation marks seems under-determined, i.e. it is not entirely clear whether the quoted words originate with the internal source (journalist) or some external source (reported speaker). Most commonly such indeterminacy concerns the so-called partial quote (Thompson 1996), also referred to as combined (Waugh 1995), incorporated (Clark and Gerrig 1990) or mixed (Cappelen and Lepore 1997). Indeterminacy is dealt with from a number of angles. The presentation takes into account grammatical, semantic and pragmatic aspects of quotation including the extent of the quote, deictic features and perspective. Also, the explanation relies on the concepts of voice and dialogue as defined by Bakhtin (1981, 1984); contextual factors, such as the position of the (scare) quote in the text; and generic factors, mainly the aim of hard news, which is to report on an event in the extra-linguistic reality in a manner that is impersonal and allegedly backgrounds the voice of the journalist (White 1997, 1998, 2000). hard news; scare quotes; partial qoutes; indeterminacy; voice
