eng Reported Language in the Lead of Hard News The paper examines the role of reported language in the lead section of hard news. It draws on the concept of genre developed by the Sydney School, especially the works by Iedema et al. (1994) and White (1998). The analysis of reported language follows Semino et al. (1997), and Semino and Short (2004). The paper is concerned with direct, non-direct and combined forms of presentation. It looks at the way their functional distinction, based on syntactic and deictic properties, makes them compatible to different extent with the function of the lead. In the present approach, the lead (together with the headline) is said to serve as a textual, ideational and interpersonal peak of the hard news; the interpersonal role of the lead lies in that it acts to identify aspects of the news event that are deemed to be threatening to the established social norms (White 1998). The presentation focuses on the way various forms of reported language (or narration) reflect or contribute to the prominent status of the lead.
