eng	Direct Forms of Representation: the Phenomenon of Embedding in Newspaper Reports	The paper looks at an important aspect of newspaper reporting, namely reported language. The paper focuses primarily on all generally recognized direct forms of representation (free direct, direct and partial quotes), their relation to non-direct forms and their mutual interaction. More specifically, the paper examines the phenomenon of embedding (Short and Semino 2004), i.e. a construction where one reported form embeds or contains within itself a different form, resulting in a type of recursively reflexive pattern similar to "He said that she said that they said…" construction. The paper addresses the concept of embedding from the following angles: the tendencies of various direct forms to embed or be embedded; possible differences found on speech, writing and thought scales; the degree of complexity resulting from the level of embedding.	reflexivity; direct and indirect forms of presentation; discoursal embedding; newspaper reports
