eng	REPORTED LANGUAGE IN DISCOURSE: AN OVERVIEW	The paper presents an overview comparing various approaches to and aspects of reported language. The paper will comment on the notions of verbatimness or faithfulness to the original as these have been one of the traditional concepts serving to define and differentiate direct forms of presentation from indirect ones. Faithfulness claims, as presented and advocated e.g. in Short et al. (2002), will be considered in relation to propositional content, speech act value and words and structures used. Also, views opposing faithfulness will be presented. It will be shown that faithfulness is more a pragmatic concept and cannot be applied in all reporting contexts. As a result, it should not be understood as a distinctive criterion in delimiting various forms of presentation. Instead, formal and syntactic criteria seem to be a more reliable and applicable option.	reported language; direct forms of represenation; faithfulness; genre
