This presentation explores cultural transfer from Spain to Central Europe in the seventeenth century, focusing on the aristocracy as active agents in shaping and using cultural exchange through their transregional networks. Rather than passively adopting foreign influences, early modern aristocrats selectively adapted and reinterpreted them in response to their own needs.
The paper argues that cultural imports played an important role in reshaping noble values and self-understanding during a period of significant socio-political change. In this context, cultural transfer functioned as a strategy of adaptation and reinvention, contributing to the emergence of a new aristocratic ideal: the cosmopolitan and cultivated connoisseur. By drawing on selected examples, the talk shows how cultural transfer operated on both practical and symbolic levels, influencing everyday practices as well as broader forms of aristocratic self-fashioning.
