A Prison or an Incubator of Peoples? The Habsburg Empire and Nation Building
by prof. Dr. Rok Stergar, University of Ljubljana
During the First World War, the Habsburg Empire was often pictured as a German-dominated "prison of peoples". The narrative that the other nations only survived because they resisted the regime became dominant in the successor states after 1918. In fact, it was one of their foundational myths. However, a lot of recent research has successfully challenged this narrative, showing that the empire actually developed a set of policies and established institutions that not only made nation building possible, but also, often inadvertently, induced it in the first place, creating a unified basis for the future development of Central Europe.
