Department of Literary Culture and Slavistics recently provides two Bachelor’s degree specializations, Historic and Literary Studies and Slavonic Studies of European Union Countries.
Bachelor’s degree programme Historic and Literary Studies provides its students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills of cultural history, literary science and sociology of culture. Interpretative comparison of different literary styles and periods offers the students deeper understanding of specific forms of creativity in the changing and constantly developing historical context. The interpretative process thus enables the graduates to influence contemporary cultural life in their own original way, for example as editors, lecturers or spokespersons. An important part of the study is to introduce students to the basics of media work and to clarify the mechanisms influencing public opinion throughout history.
Slavonic Studies of European Union Countries represents a type of programme focused both on cultural history and language and it is formed by three study modules: Polish, Slovenian and Bulgarian one, which exactly corresponds to the current language structure and needs of the European Union. The character of the study is uniquein our country nowadays, therefore it was prepared in cooperation with the leading Czech universities, first of all with the members of Department of Slavonic and East European Studies at Charles University in Prague. The objective is to provide Bachelor’s degree students with education applicable in the process of European Union enlargement, both in the sphere of business and tourism. This corresponds to the profile of graduates, who should find appropriate job specialization in tourism and middle management of different kinds of firms in the particular language area. The graduates could also apply their knowledge and skills in the institutions of EU-wide action.
From the academic year 2010-2011, two new Master’s degree specializations will be opened: Cultural History (the study is provided by Institute of Historical Sciences), History of Literary Culture and Slavonic Cultural and Historic Studies. These specialisations will enable our department’s Bachelor students to continue Master’s learning in their original field. Both Master’s degree specializations are open to any graduate of related Bachelor’s degree studies coming from universities in the Czech Republic and the EU countries.
History of Literary Culture – characteristics and content of the module
The newly accredited Master’s specialization is based on the traditional - and for the Pardubice Faculty of Philosophy and Arts typical - connection between literary studies and cultural history, which forms the basic module of the branch. The following disciplines, together with Master’s thesis defence are the target fields of the State Examination:
- The role of Czech writer in the society of 19th and 20th century
- Contemporary Czech literature
- History of book culture
Graduates of the History of Literary Culture moduleare - due to their acquired knowledge and methodology - qualified to understand the basic historical processes of forming modern and postmodern literary culture. This enables them to take an active part in research, editorial work or creative writing including all current cultural spheres, as well as in specific programmes of various educational institutions.
The acquired professional qualifications enable the graduates to work as members of various kinds of publishing staff, mass media and cultural institutions workers, such as educational centres, professional libraries or amateur cultural groups. Graduates could occupy one of the following positions:
- youth club programme manager
- editor of amateur literary programmes
- literary journal chief editor
- radio programmes scriptwriter
- exhibitions manager
Graduates of the Master’s degree module History of Literary Culture should acquire the ability to create and form conception of the above mentioned institutions, to formulate grant projects, to lecture and report on specific topics, or to participate in written discussions in public communication sphere.
Slavonic Cultural and Historic Studies - characteristics and content of the module

- Literature as intercultural communication
- Multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism in Slavonic cultures
- Centres and peripheries of Slavonic cultures
Graduates of theSlavonic Cultural and Historic Studies module should be - due to their acquired knowledge and methodology - able to reflect the cultural conditions of their country in broader Slavonic context; they are well equipped with language skills (Polish, Slovenian or Bulgarian) necessary for day-to-day as well as professional communication in the sphere of humanities and social sciences; they can also arrange and present official meetings. Graduates are able to collect, analyze and evaluate different kinds of information and to prepare documents, reports, proposals or recommendations in the above mentioned fields. They should be able to develop international cooperation with cultural, social, administrative and state authorities, including the background of economic relationships.
