eng Integration in English Language Teacher Education: Benefits and Challenges Integration is believed to be one of critically important pedagogical cornerstones that contribute to more powerful teacher preparation programmes. Deploying various strategies that enhance tight coherence and integration among courses and between courses and clinical work is aimed at fighting back the effects of structural and conceptual fragmentation of teacher education programmes. Nevertheless, those strategies may be difficult to implement due to various institution-specific constraints. The presentation introduces components of the English Language Teacher Education Programme at the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic, its structure, and, most importantly, different ways of deploying integration in the programme. Achieving a high level of integration in the programme has always been a priority because of the perceived value of its benefits. There are content areas within which it is easier to integrate coursework, for example, ELT methodology and clinical work. Regarding integration, some other areas represent a challenge. The focus of the presentation will be on a recent innovation, which attempts to integrate an advanced syntax course with ELT methodology. The rationale for implementing the innovation will be presented as well as the evaluation of its trial run including teacher trainees´ and teacher educators´ reflection on the experience. In conclusion, benefits and challenges of integration will be summarized. English language teacher education; integration
