eng Epistemic Modality in Linguistics Theses Written by Czech Students of English This paper is concerned with the use of epistemic modal verbs, particularly modal verbs conveying possibility, in linguistics bachelor’s theses written by Czech students of English. The small-scale study focuses on examining the frequency of occurrence, distribution and functions of epistemic modal verbs conveying possibility with the aim of exploring the way Czech learners employ the verbs to present their research findings and interpret collected data. The results achieved are compared with those obtained in an analysis of selected texts written by linguists in order to detect differences in the use of epistemic modal verbs between novice and professional linguistic academic discourse. The findings indicate that the incidence of epistemic modal verbs expressing possibility is higher in professional academic discourse and that Czech learners tend to overuse some modal verbs or employ them in different contexts. epistemic modality; modal verbs; possibility; bachelor's theses; Czech learners; linguistic academic discourse
