Vzhledem k tomu, že jazykové prostředky atenuace významu, v našem případě modální slovesa, jsou vnímány jako nezbytná součást akademického diskursu (Hyland, 1995), kapitola zjišťuje a prezentuje, jak studenti aplikují jejich explicitní znalost (Gass and Selinker, 2008; Ellis, 2005) týkající se užití modálních sloves v akademickém psaní. Cílem je tedy prozkoumat, zda a jakým způsobem dochází k osvojování této specifické pragmatické znalosti v kontextu formálního vzdělávání. K analýze procesů formování explicitní znalosti bylo využito dotazníkového šetření, zatímco k zjištění implicitní znalosti studentů byly analyzovány výskyty modálních sloves v praktických částech vybraných bakalářských prací. Získané výsledky naznačují, že studenti při prezentaci a interpretaci svých zjištění plně nevyužívají pragmatického potenciálu modálních sloves jako prostředku atenuace významu. atenuace významu (hedging); modální slovesa; akademické psaní; bakalářské práce; explicitní znalost; implicitní znalost
eng Academic writing: modal verbs in the role of hedges This chapter is concerned with the use of modal verbs as hedging devices in bachelor's theses written by Czech students of English, particularly by students of the study programme English for Business. Since modality is viewed as the most important concept that cuts across the area of hedges (Markkanen and Schröder, 1997) and hedging devices, i.e. expressions qualifying and toning down utterances in order to reduce the riskiness of what one says (Wales, 2001), are considered an essential part of academic discourse (Hyland, 1995), the chapter investigates whether and how students apply their explicit knowledge (Gass and Selinker, 2008; Ellis, 2005) concerning English modal verbs in the role of hedges in academic writing. Thus, the aim is to explore the acquisition and application of the particular pragmatic knowledge in the context of formal education. For the purposes of our study we used questionnaires to analyse the processes of explicit knowledge forming, whereas to examine students’ implicit knowledge we analysed the occurrence and use of modals in discussion sections of selected final papers. The results indicate that our learners do not seem to fully exploit the pragmatic potential of modals in the role of hedges when presenting and interpreting findings of their studies. hedging; modal verbs; academic writing; bachelor's theses; explicit knowledge; implicit knowledge
