At the end of November 2023, the Department of Education of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of UPCE organised a traditional conference as part of the series Current Issues in Resocialisation Pedagogy. The theme of the conference was Child in criminal proceedings in the role of the offender.
Experts in the field guided the conference participants through the three stages of criminal proceedings. The focus was on how the law enforcement authorities, the social and legal protection of children, the probation service and the mediation service work in practice. Answers were also given to the question of how a young offender is viewed by lawyers or protective education workers.
The panel discussion was attended by students of the Humanities, Resocialisation Pedagogy and Health and Social Worker study programmes. Representatives of non-profit organisations working in the field of social and legal protection as well as international participants from Armenia and Poland also accepted the invitation.
How Difficult is the Interrogation of a Child? Experts in the Field Shared Their Answers
Why is it that only certain criminal activities are often highlighted in the media? How difficult is the interrogation of a child? And is it really necessary to have an immediate opinion on every issue?
These questions were answered by experts from various professions in the field of criminal procedure. At the end of November 2024, a prosecutor, a forensic psychologist, a former investigator and a judge took part in the traditional conference of the Department of Education of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of UPCE, which this year focused on the theme of the Child as a victim of crime.
Although the topics were challenging, the discussion provided a great opportunity for the students to gain insight into the processes of criminal proceedings.
The biggest lesson? In order to form an opinion, you really need to look at the issue in depth. Can we talk coherently about the issue for at least 5 minutes? If we know nothing about a problem, how can we understand why it is happening?
