Variety "a dove that plucks its own feathers and feeds them to its young" in eastern Bohemia	This chapter traces the iconography, genesis, and variations of the theme of almsgiving in Central European and, above all, Czech Baroque sculpture. Inspired by the concept of gift-giving in anthropology, the interpretation develops the theme through the depiction of one motif from the legend of St. John of Nepomuk. In eastern Bohemia, it identifies a group of sculptures of the saint with a beggar (or poor child), whose composition was taken by sculptors from the paintings of the famous Czech painter Petr Brandl (1668-1735).
