Na příkladu románů Winter Study (2008) Nevady Barr a Once There Were Wolves (2021) Charlotte McConaghy kapitola dokládá, jak několik inovací v žánrových schématech umožňuje smysluplné úvahy o přírodě a lidském postoji k ní. Jednou z těchto změn je chápání dějiště jako komplexního environmentu, jak jej definuje Lawrence Buell ve své průkopnické práci The Environmental Imagination (1995). Detektivní romány dále propojují vědecké a poetické prvky a do kriminálních zápletek začleňují vědecky přesné popisy fauny, flóry a přírodních procesů. Kapitola zkoumá způsoby, jak romány využívají národní park nejen jako dějiště, ale také jako prostor pro tzv. terapii divočinou a nacházení útěchy v přírodě a divokosti. Součástí analýzy je i narativní role vlků v kriminálním příběhu a kontrast mezi jejich symbolickou hodnotou a realistickým zobrazením. Přirozená predace je jasně odlišena od lidského násilí, konkrétně domácího násilí, což podtrhuje ekologické poselství románů. eng Crimes, Wolves and Consolation: National Parks in Contemporary Crime Fiction This chapter argues that contemporary crime fiction can effectively address environmental issues and reflect on the human-nature relationship. It has the ability to address the complexities involved in protecting wildlife while still retaining the appeal of a popular genre. Using Nevada Barr’s Winter Study (2008) and Charlotte McConaghy’s Once There Were Wolves (2021), the chapter demonstrates how meaningful deliberations on nature and human attitudes toward it were enabled by several changes in the genre’s formula. These changes include approaching the setting as a complex environment, as defined in Lawrence Buell’s seminal work The Environmental Imagination (1995). Similarly to the new nature writing characterized by Robert Macfarlane (2013), the novels mix scientific and poetic elements by inserting scientifically accurate descriptions of wildlife and natural processes into their crime plots. The chapter further analyzes how the novels use national parks as settings to engage in a discourse on wilderness therapy, the consolation of nature, wildness, and nature conservation. Finally, it discusses the incorporation of wolves into the crime narrative, highlighting the contrast between the wolf’s symbolic value and realistic depiction. Animal predation is sharply distinguished from human violence, specifically domestic violence, emphasizing the novels’ environmental advocacy.
