eng	Fear, Law and Rationality: Plato’s Legislative Innovation of the Preamble	In Book I of his Laws, Plato makes a well-known distinction between two kinds of fear: φόβος and αἰδώς.1 While the positive value of the fear of disgrace (or shame) for the training of the virtue of self-control has been amply studied, what has not so far been sufficiently explained is why Plato needs an opposition between two types of fear and what the nature of this opposition consists in. In this contribution, I shall argue that the opposition between the two types of fear in Book I serves as the foundation for reform of the existing Greek legislative practice that Plato introduces in Book IV.
