Její vliv na kancléře nelze podceňovat. Princezna přivedla na svět pět dětí (tři se dožily dospělosti), přesto trávila většinu času v kancléřství, kde pomáhala třídit kancléřovu poštu a zejména diplomatické depeše. Stejně jako její manžel věřila v nutnost rovnováhy sil v Evropě; stejně jako on byla toho názoru, že prosazování liberálních a nacionalistických zásad by vedlo k rozpadu Evropy. Její objemný osobní deník, který si vedla od roku 1821 do konce svého života, je mimořádně výmluvném pramenem k princezniným politickým názorům, společenskému životu Vídně 30. a 40. let 19. století, i k jejímu manželství, mateřství a každodennímu životu, v němž šlechta postupně ztrácela své postavení. Politics Chancellor Metternich's third wife, the 30 years younger Hungarian noblewoman Melanie Zichy-Ferraris (1805-1854), whom he married on 30 January 1831, was considered by her contemporaries to be a spirited, confident and charming woman with intellectual gifts and a sharp tongue who often embarrassed her friends, officials and the diplomatic corps. Her influence on the Chancellor cannot be underestimated. The princess brought five children into the world (three lived to adulthood), yet she spent most of her time in the chancellery, helping to sort the chancellor's mail and especially diplomatic dispatches. Like her husband, she believed in the need for a balance of power in Europe; like him, she believed that the promotion of liberal and nationalist principles would lead to the disintegration of Europe. Her voluminous personal diary, which she kept from 1821 until the end of her life, is an extremely eloquent source for the princess's political views, the social life of Vienna in the 1830s and 1840s, and her marriage, motherhood and everyday life in which the nobility gradually lost its position.
