eng Premarital sexuality and its control by the Catholic Church in Bohemia in the second half of the 19th century Paper outlines the issue of premarital sexuality among Catholic couples in the second half of the 19th century in Bohemia. Research indicates what proportion of the engaged couples entered marriage with prior sexual experience and what instruments the Catholic Church used to control premarital sexuality. Research is based on two types of sources: Catholic manuals and periodicals and so-called marriage protocols included inquiries about sexual experience of fiancés. The paper also presents research conducted in the town of Pardubice in Bohemia which provides an insight into an agrarian population undergoing rapid urbanization in the last third of the 19th century and the changes in its sexual behaviour. 19. century; Catholic Church; premarital sexuality; marriage protocols
