eng	‘Fame goes to one’s head’: The lures of fame and the moral perils of addiction, pride and vanity	The paper examines the moral perils for the character of those who attain fame through significant achievements or talent, as expressed in the idiom ‘fame goes to one’s head’. I claim that there are two ways to understand this corruption of the character, which are reflected in the two interpretations of the idiom I will offer. Analysing the nature of the desire for fame, I come to the first interpretation in which fame parallels alcohol and the typical behavioural effects of intoxication and addiction. In the second interpretation, the corruption refers to the fact that the person starts to think she is better than others and to act in a haughty, conceited and arrogant way. I consider the vice of pride and identify one of its subspecies, namely vanity, as the one in which fame, not success alone, goes to one’s head.
