The Importance of the Surrounding Environment for the Perception of the Urban Cultural Heritage	The protection of cultural and natural heritage has become an increasingly popular topic in the last century. In the last decades, there has also been a renewed discussion about cultural landscapes and the setting of monuments in cultural landscapes. The surroundings of monuments, in many cases very extensive, has therefore come to be seen as a very important element worthy of protection, at least in theory. In practice, the protection of a wider environment is more difficult and often simply unattainable due to various third party elements (e.g. investors or development of the area). This paper addresses the relationship between monuments and green spaces in the urban environment. The paper works with a critical hypothesis that while monuments themselves enjoy strong protection, their immediate and extensive surroundings are only superficially protected, if at all. The main „heretical” idea of the paper is that the surroundings themselves are actually more important than the monument itself, and that altering or destroying the surroundings is tantamount to destroying the monument. To defend this idea, the method of phenomenology of place and space is used, which approaches the issue from a philosophical point of view, focusing on the individual’s perception of space. In addition, the analysis of international documents published by organizations such as UNESCO or ICOMOS, national methodologies of selected countries (e.g. UK, USA, Norway, Czech Republic, etc.), as well as concrete examples from the Euro-Atlantic cultural area illustrate possible approaches to the protection, revitalization and sustainable development of urban green spaces in historic cities and at cultural monuments. The paper is thus a fusion of philosophy and practice. Its main objective is to create space to reflect on the hidden qualities of green spaces and to propose some ways to approach them with sensitivity and reverence.
