K založení deníku nestačí pouhá gramotnost, nezbytná je i schopnost a chuť formulovat vlastní myšlenky, stejně jako relativně vysoká úroveň vzdělanosti. Především z těchto důvodů bylo psaní deníků zpočátku omezeno na privilegované vrstvy, teprve s rozvojem gramotnosti nastalo jejich vertikální rozšíření.	19. století; gender history; osobní deníky
