Je to dostatečně dlouho na to, abychom mohli uvažovat o jeho odkazu a slabých i silných stránkách jeho teoretické práce. Jsem si jist, že Ernest Gellner zůstane mezi nejvlivnějšími mysliteli dvacátého století, obzvláště pak na poli mně blízkém, a to je studium nacionalismu. Tato práce se zabývá využitelností Gellnerovy teorie na současný nacionalismus. Vzhledem k tomu, že můj výzkum probíhá na Dálném východě a zaměřuje se na čínský a tchajwanský nacionalismus, rozhodl jsem se konfrontovat Gellnerovu teorii právě s tímto terénem, který je mimo rámec jeho vlastního zaměření. V první části se tedy zabývám aplikovatelností Gellnerovy teorie v čínském kontextu. Srovnávám jeho teorii industriálního modernismu s teorií kapitalismu tisku Benedicta Andersona. Tvrdím, že Gellnerovo trvání na nacionalismu jako produktu modernity je sporné v mimoevropském kontextu, a je proto nahrazován Andersonovou teorií, která vychází právě z empirického výzkumu v tomto areálu. Přes kritiku samotného modernistického přístupu k nacionalismu Gellnera tvrdím, že i tak je jeho přínos právě k pochopení modernity a jejích specifických modů společenské organizace zaštítěné nacionalistickým rámcem a v kooperaci s ekonomikou neopomenutelný. Právě vztah nacionalismu a ekonomického růstu je v případě čínského nacionalismu základním prvkem politické legitimity. Druhá část textu se věnuje bližšímu pohledu na rozdíly mezi čínskou a taiwanskou identitou. Zde tvrdím, že taiwanství je přímou reakcí na a naprostou opozicí vůči čínskosti. Abychom pochopili jedno, musíme nejprve více rozebrat druhé. A analýze docházím k závěru, že čínskost není u obyvatel Taiwanu konceptem, který by byl tak ustálený, jak je často předestíráno, a taiwanství může být definováno ostrým kontrastem k čínskosti, přičemž se legitimizuje skrze odlišné hodnoty. eng	Nation-Building in Aging Taiwan: A Gellnerian Perspective	More than quarter of century has passed since Ernest Gellner prematurely died in Prague. That is long enough to think about his legacy, and about strong and weak spots in his theoretical work. Without a doubt, I am confident that Ernest Gellner will remain one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, especially in the field I focus on myself, which is the study of nationalism. This chapter contemplates Gellner’s legacy and the applicability of his theory to contemporary nationalisms. Since my field research is based in the Far East and is focused on Chinese and Taiwanese nationalism, I have decided to confront Gellner’s theory of nationalism with my own empirical experience, which is outside of his research space. The first part of my chapter focuses on how applicable Gellner’s legacy can be in the Chinese or general Far Eastern context. I confront Gellner’s industrial modernist approach to nationalism with Benedict Anderson’s print capitalist constructivism. I argue that Gellner’s insistence that nationalism is rooted in modernity is problematic in non-European contexts and is therefore quite logically replaced by Anderson’s theory, which is based on empirical research in Southeast Asia and reflects the specifics of Asian nationalisms and their genesis with greater success. On the other hand, I also argue that, in spite of Gellner’s questionable contribution to explaining the origins of nationalism in the Asian context, the major theoretical asset he offers for studying Chinese nationalism is his structured, clear approach to modernity, which generates specific modes of social organization covered by the nationalism framework and its mutual interconnection with economy. Both nationalism and economic growth are, especially in the case of Chinese nationalism, crucial components of political legitimacy. Taking a closer look at the differences between Taiwanese and Chinese identities is the major goal of the second part of the chapter.
