cze The Sociologists‘ Road to Tampere: Sociologists and 1960s Political Mobilisation In March, 1971, Westermarck Society (the Finnish Sociological Association) held its regular, annual convention at the University of Tampere. A young, left-leaning generation took over the society leadership and soon also the sociology journal. The event was symptomatic of many aspects of the ongoing cultural shift. After a liberal early phase, student activity was channeled into left wing politics, with the year 1968 as a symbolic milestone. New movements were born, but also existing societies and cultural institutions were ‘taken over’. One of these was the sociological Westermartck Society. This essay is based on interviews and contemporary records. Westermarck Society; Left wing radicalism; Student movement; Sociology; Intellectual history; Finland; 1968
